[What is the Somin Festival?]

The Somin Festival, which is held throughout Iwate Prefecture, has been designated as a Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property as the "Iwate Somin Festival."

Men dressed only in loincloths compete to grab the Somin bag (bag twisting), and local women, carrying on the spirit of Somin Shorai, treat visitors to vegetarian cuisine (kenchinjiru).

The womb of Daisho Acala holds a Buddha statue (made by Jikaku Daishi) that grants blessings of safe childbirth, fertility, and prosperity of descendants.The temple was also spared from a fire in 1893 by its immense divine power, and is said to have the blessing of warding off all disasters.

Now, in 2012, to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Fudoson, the battle to grab the Somin bag has been revived, with men from all over the country gathering naked and only wearing loincloths to perform water purification rituals, climb the firewood tree, and compete to grab the Somin bag, livening up the festival.Children wear demon masks and take part in the procession, and worshippers take home the wooden pieces that are pulled from the Somin bag as talismans.

Buddhist vegetarian cuisine is served to guests and the general public. In particular, "O-Fudosan Kenchinjiru" has long been popular and is enjoyed by everyone every year. This festival is open to everyone, from local elderly people to children, as well as worshippers from inside and outside the town.
