Lecturer: Mitsuyo Kitamura

Food Culture Researcher
Herb and olive oil researcher

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1939. Graduated from Hope College in Michigan, USA. During his time studying abroad in the USA, he encountered herbs and developed an interest in food culture. Believing that language and food are all one culture, he grows herbs at his home in Kamakura and practices a life of enjoying herbs. He particularly advocates the use of herbs in everyday life, and has introduced how to use herbs in many magazines and books. In 1994, he left his position as a Spanish professor at Aoyama Gakuin University, where he had taught for 29 years, to dedicate himself to researching food culture. He traveled around Italy, the birthplace of herbs, and was fascinated by the depth of the country's diet. He also has a home in Parma and established the Japan-Italy Cultural Exchange Center. He is also interested in the diet of Mediterranean countries, including Italy, and the olive oil that is the foundation of it. He develops his own food awareness activities, known as "Kitamura-style Slow Food," through events, talk shows, books, cooking classes, etc. His books include "Herb Cooking" (Shibata Shoten), "Everyone, Thanks to Herbs" and "My Favorite Italian Cuisine" (both published by Bunka Publishing Bureau), and many others. Her recent publications include "Delicious Prescriptions: Olive Oil Recipes" (Sekai Bunka Publishing).
